Question:

What is infantile colic?

Colic is abdominal discomfort which occurs in healthy babies causing intense irritability and crying.  It is said to occur in about 20% of babies and start in the newborn period and can persist up to several months.  It usually occurs in the late afternoon and evenings with crying lasting up to several hours.  Child may draw his legs up to the abdomen and passing flatus may provide partial relief.  He is otherwise well in between the episodes with soft abdomen.

Parents should be aware of the condition and assured that it is harmless.  They can burp the baby frequently during feeds.  During the actual episode, soft background music, gentle rhythmic rocking, warm bath or a body massage may reduce the discomfort.  In some cases, medication may be helpful.  Do see your paediatrician about it.

The danger signs are a swollen and red abdomen and vomiting (especially greenish or bright yellowish).  Red and swollen groin or blood in the stools.  These symptoms are not consistent with colic and you should bring your child to see a doctor immediately.
